A large hand carved single‑piece wooden Dutch 19th‑century speculaas plank dating to 1850–1900, 60 cm long, 11.5 cm wide and 2 cm deep, in good condition with minor signs of aging.
Description from the seller
A remarkable piece of Dutch baking and folk culture from the 19th century. This large, hand-carved speculaas board features five different scenes, each with a charming, narrative tableau in beautifully deep wood engraving. Speculaas boards of this size and with such figurative details are increasingly rare and sought after by collectors of antique kitchen tools and Low Countries folklore.
Performances on the shelf
Among other things, visible from top to bottom are:
A musician with an instrument and a flower crown.
A man playing music with a contrabass.
A richly filled flower basket
A dancing farmer couple in traditional clothing.
A man with a hat next to a beer barrel (tapper or brewer).
The plank is made from a single piece of wood, hand-carved. This type of plank was used around holidays for making speculaas or taaitaai, often featuring popular figures from daily life or symbolic scenes. Today, they are mainly appreciated as decorative folk art objects.
Beautiful warm patina, appropriate signs of age, some old wormholes, and signs of use as expected in an authentic 19th-century piece. The back features a hanging eyelet, making it immediately suitable as wall decor.
A unique opportunity to add a true eye-catcher to your collection of speculaas boards, antique baking tools, or Low Countries folk art. Decorative, atmospheric, and full of history.
