Dating from 1950–1960, this Dutch charm storage box is made of glass, cotton and cardboard and measures 24 × 19 × 8.5 cm.
Description from the seller
A particularly beautiful showpiece for enthusiasts of Amsterdam history, antique prints, and curiosities. This charming preservation or document box is enhanced with an original, hand-colored steel engraving bearing the inscription 'Amsterdam – Amstel Vaartoneel'. It depicts a lively cityscape with, among other things, a windmill, various boats on the Amstel, and figures along the shore. The scene is highly detailed and bears the signatures of the creators: F. Hoefnagel del. and J. H. Kock sculpt.
The box was likely made in the second half of the 19th century or the early 20th century, intended to store valuable paper goods, letters, or documents. The edges are decorated with cord, and the interior is lined with light material.
Condition
Good condition for its age, with signs of aging appropriate for an antique object: light discoloration on the interior, some wear on the upholstery, and small imperfections on the edges. The lid closes well, and the print has been well preserved.
Estimated dating
Circa 1850–1900 (pre-industrial production of the 19th century)
A rare and unique collectible that is both decorative and historically interesting. Ideal for collectors of Amsterdam memorabilia, print art, antique paper goods, and interior decor with a story.
