Description from the seller
Two-Tier Dragon Carved Pedestal Table with Water Buffalo Mask Feet, Monkey Pod Wood, Philippines, Mid-20th Century
This pedestal table is entirely hand-carved from a single solid block of Monkey Pod wood. The structure features a boldly carved high-relief dragon forming the central support, rising through two circular tiers and carrying the round top. The dragon’s body transitions seamlessly downward, terminating in four sculpted feet carved as stylized water buffalo faces, integrating figurative detail with structural function.
Manufacturer and origin
Hand-carved workshop production, Philippines.
Date of production
Circa 1950s–1960s.
Style and function
Sculptural pedestal table combining functional furniture with figurative carving. Produced primarily as a decorative interior object, suitable for use as an accent table or display stand.
Condition
Structurally stable. Surface shows consistent age-related wear, softened carving edges, and an even dark patina. Minor surface marks consistent with hand carving and age. No structural cracks or later repairs observed.
Value justification
The table is carved entirely from one solid piece of Monkey Pod wood, a hardwood valued for its durability and expressive grain. Executing a two-tier open structure with a load-bearing high-relief dragon and four individually carved water buffalo mask feet requires advanced carving skill and careful material control. The uninterrupted, joint-free construction significantly enhances technical and collector value.
Context and representativeness
Dragon imagery is a recurring motif in Southeast Asian decorative arts, symbolizing strength and protection. The water buffalo holds particular cultural importance in the Philippines as a symbol of labor, resilience, and rural life. The combination of these motifs within a functional object reflects mid-20th-century Philippine artisan furniture intended for both local use and export.
Preservation state
Original surface preserved. Natural patina retained. No modern refinishing.
