Description from the seller

Uxor Ebraica, seu de nuptiis et divortiis ex iure civili, id est, divino et talmudico, veterum ebraeorum, libri tres. – Ioannis Seldeni [John Selden (1584-1654)]

Londini [London]: Typis Richardi Bishopi, 1646. [22], 630, [2] pages. 19cm x 14cm. Full vellum binding with gilt lettered label on the spine. First edition of this detailed treatise on Jewish marriage and divorce law, based on an in-depth analysis of the Bible, the Talmud, and rabbinic commentaries. Selden argues for the civil, contractual nature of marriage in Judaism and questions the ecclesiastical doctrine of indissolubility of marriage. The text is in Latin, but source material in Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, and English is quoted throughout.
Rubbing, bumping, wear, and some soiling to the boards and spine. Remains of some handwriting on the spine. Pen and pencil markings on the front endpapers, and pencil markings on the back pastedown endpaper. Small tear at the top of the title page, some tears at the bottom of page 129/130, fraying at the top of page 153/154, and fixed tears on page 551/552. Water staining on the bottom half of the pages throughout. Spotting, browning, and cockling of the pages throughout. The text is clear, and the binding is solid. Overall, and considering its age, a copy in good+ condition.
