Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, early Italian first edition with a rare dust jacket bearing the full author name Joanne K. Rowling and original illustrations by Serena Riglietti, in Italian, hardback, good condition, 310 pages, published in 1999 by Adriano Salani Editore.
Description from the seller
Copy of 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,' early Italian edition with the uncommon dust jacket featuring the author's full name, 'Joanne K. Rowling.' Includes the iconic original illustrations by Serena Riglietti. Highly sought after by collectors and for international first editions.
I am presenting at auction a highly collectible copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, published in 1999 by Mondolibri under license from Adriano Salani Editore. This early Italian edition is part of the first European impressions following the British publication of 1998, which increases its bibliographic interest.
Key feature of this copy
The rare dust jacket with the author's full name. A feature especially sought after by collectors is that this dust jacket displays the author's name as 'Joanne K. Rowling,' which is only present in the earliest editions of the saga in Italy. Many later printings replaced this full form, making copies that retain it increasingly scarce.
Original illustrations by Serena Riglietti.
The cover, illustrated by Serena Riglietti, is an important piece within the visual history of the first Italian editions. Its dreamy and symbolic style sets this edition apart from the British and American covers. These illustrations have become a hallmark of identity for collectors of Italian Harry Potter editions.
Brief historical context
Following the international success of 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' in 1998, Salani made an editorial bet on original illustrations to differentiate the Italian market. This unique visual approach, combined with the early publication date, makes these editions key pieces within the saga's collector's market.
The original dedication included in this edition, 'A Séan P.F. Harris, artista della fuga e amico dei temporali,' directly connects to the author's creative process in the early years of Harry Potter.
