Fourth revised and expanded edition of Benjamin Hederich's Greek lexicon (1675-1748), with the participation of Johann August Ernesti (1707-1781), first published in 1722. Text in Latin for the definition of Greek words, printed in two columns, with beautiful title pages in red and black.
Copy bound in an elegant full calf binding, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and tools, title piece pasted on in ochre, gilt initials, red edges. Fine copy, large octavo; well preserved overall. Leather rubbed and scuffed on the covers, at the headbands. Solid work. Interior clean, paper slightly grayish, with few spots. A brown stain on two leaves and a small ink stain on the edge.
Provenance: from the Château des Ormes Library with a heraldic ex-libris glued to the front endpaper.
Benjamin Hederich, Latinized as Benjaminus Hedericus, was a German professor and lexicographer from Saxony (1675-1748). He published educational works, dictionaries, and manuals of Greek and Latin; his 'Græcum lexicon manuale,' published in 1722 and reprinted numerous times (with revisions and additions by Johann August Ernesti in 1767), was very popular in schools across Germany and England.
Johann August Ernesti (1707–1781), a rationalist theologian, philologist, educator, and German rector. He is credited with several biographies of personalities from ancient Rome.
