Nicolas Machiavel / Alexandra Grinewski, L'Archidiable Belphégor. Nouvelle très plaisante., a 1930 first French edition, illustrated edition in one volume of 88 pages, limited to 295 copies (this copy no. 23 on white Rives vellum), bound in Bradel full ivory vellum with a gilt head and ochre title piece, in very good condition with few spots on the boards.

Very beautiful illustrated edition, and the 'first complete French version' of Machival's story, adorned with 20 etchings by Alexandra Grinewski.
Limited to 295 copies. This one on white B.F.K. de Rives vellum, specially made and watermarked with the publisher's name. It bears the number 23.
Bound in an elegant full vellum binding executed in the Bradel style, with a smooth spine adorned with an ochre title piece with gilded initials. Gilt head. Covers and spine preserved.
In very good condition. Small stains on the covers, sturdy binding. Impeccable interior. Carefully crafted and uncommon edition.
The new 'Belphégor' by Machiavelli was written in 1518 and was imitated under the same title by La Fontaine. Argument: 'The archdevil Belphégor is sent into this world by Pluto, with the obligation to take a wife there. He arrives, marries, but, unable to bear the height of his wife, he prefers to return to hell rather than be reunited with her.'
Alexandra Alexandrovna Grinevskaya (1899-1976) was a Russian-French actress, artist, and illustrator. She was the first wife of the artist Alexandre Alexeieff. Grinevskaya illustrated limited editions of books for bibliophiles, notably for the publishing houses Gallimard, Orion, and Pléiades. Six works were published under her artistic direction.
