The first and only edition of polymath Athanasius Kircher's work on the province of Latium, both ancient and modern. Perhaps to avoid duplication of the many other books describing the city of Rome, Kircher's work focuses on Rome's environs, and the topographical and archaeological sites thereabout. Kircher had made Rome his home and after publishing studies about localities as far afield as China, he turned his eyes to his own adopted region. Studies include the Villa Quintilii, the Gardens of Maecenas, the ancient city of Praeneste, and many others. Folio (38 x 26cm), [xii], 263pp., [vi], [vii]. Engraved title-page and full-page portrait in addition to 26 maps/plates/plans (13 of which are double-pages or folding) and numerous engravings in text. Moderately browned throughout. Bound in publisher's boards with some wear. Overall a very nice copy.
