AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Great and very fine still life with flowers on an antique terrace with a distant view of the park. This exceptionally beautiful painting was created in 1892 by the well-listed German female flower painter Clara Krüger von Sivers (1854 Pinneberg/Holstein - 1924 Berlin). A few of Sivers' flower paintings are included in the important 'List of paintings of the 19th century' by Friedrich von Boetticher, among others; our painting is probably also listed under the title 'Autumn fruits and roses on a wall.' Clara von Sivers (born Krüger) studied at the art academies in Copenhagen, Paris, Stuttgart, and Dresden. She was married to the naval officer von Sivers and lived with him on the estates of his noble family: at Staelenhof in Livonia, and until 1892, in the settlement of Andrejewo, Vitebsk Province, Russian Empire. Based on this biographical detail—since the painting is dated '1892' by the artist—we can conclude that it was also painted in the Russian Empire during her lifetime, on one of the noble estates near Vitebsk. We found interesting information about the von Sievers noble family. The husband of our artist came from a famous Russian count's family of Russian Germans, who made significant contributions to Russian history and represented the Russian bureaucratic and military elite (see Wikipedia and the 'Russian bibliographical dictionary' by A. Polovtzev, 1896-1918). After her husband's death, Clara von Sivers moved to Germany; from 1893, she lived and worked in Kiel, and from 1898 in Berlin, where we acquired this painting. Works by Sivers are housed in the Museum of Chemnitz and in many private collections across Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and the USA.
