Gebel Kamil meteorite, an iron meteorite from the Uweinat Desert, Egypt, weighing 160 g.
Description from the seller
Meteorite
Gebel Kamil / Egypt
On February 19, 2009, the Italian-Egyptian expedition reached the 45-meter-wide crater in the East Uweinat Desert and found thousands of small meteoritic explosion shrapnel, as well as an individual weighing 83 kg. The crater was previously spotted in Google Earth images.
Some of the found meteorites have molten sand attached. The shrapnel shows typical explosion scars, such as twisted and frayed edges. The parts exposed to sandblast on the Earth's surface display tiny pockmark-like surfaces.
Gebel Kamil is an ungrouped ataxite, the ataxites are a group of iron meteorites that have not developed a Widmanstätten pattern. Approximately 1,600 kg of shrapnel have been found.
The crater is relatively young at about 5,000 years and is very well preserved, with ejecta rays similar to those known from lunar craters present in the immediate vicinity of the crater.
