Madame de Montespan and Louis XIV: A Historical Study
Author: Pierre Clément
Publisher: Librairie Académique Didier et Cie, Paris, 1868, second edition, hardcover
A book of historical significance. Madame de Montespan is known for her affair with King Louis XIV, which lasted more than ten years (from 1667 to 1678) and from which seven children were born.
At the time of her marriage, she was already a lady-in-waiting at the French court in Versailles. At twenty years old, she entered the service of Queen Marie-Thérèse of France as a lady-in-waiting. The Marquise de Montespan quickly became very popular at the French court thanks to her beauty, charm, and intelligence. She was well-versed in politics and could therefore hold her own against members of the high nobility and the royal family. The Marquise was an important patron of many artists from the Grand Siècle, such as Molière and Jean de La Fontaine.
