Forêt de Soignes, a XIXth‑century oil on canvas marouflé on cardboard by Sha Qi Sadji (1914–2005) from Belgium, signed by hand in Chinese and Latin at the lower right, measuring 51 by 41 cm.
Description from the seller
SHA Qi, called SADJI (1914-2005)
Sonian Forest
Oil on canvas mounted on a cardboard panel.
Signed at the bottom right in Chinese characters and Latin letters.
Marked on the back
Dimensions: +/- 51 cm × 41 cm
This work by Sha Qi, known in Europe as Sadji, depicts a landscape of the Soignes Forest rendered in a warm, autumnal palette. The artist employs dense pictorial material, applied in thick, expressive strokes characteristic of his Belgian period. The foliage vibrates under the effect of overlapping layers of color, ranging from deep greens to bright reds and ochres, while the water surface subtly reflects these vegetal masses.
The composition, balanced around a tree with nerve-like branches, reflects Sadji's interest in the meeting between Eastern pictorial tradition and Western oil painting techniques. The treatment of the landscape, both energetic and lyrical, perfectly illustrates this stylistic synthesis that makes his work unique.
The canvas, mounted on its original cardboard, bears two signatures — in Chinese and Latin — confirming the authenticity of Sadji's hand. The title Forest of Soignes is inscribed on the back, providing a valuable geographical detail for enthusiasts of Belgian scenes.
General condition
Good overall condition; minor wear on the cardboard support, consistent with age; painted surface stable.
Remarks
Representative work of Sadji during his stay in Europe. Expressive landscape, rich palette, and excellent quality of material. An attractive painting for Sino-Belgian art collectors and modern landscapes.
It will be shipped by registered mail and very well protected.
