Description from the seller
Antique painting, oil on canvas, from the 17th century and dated 1624, depicting a Portrait of a gentleman.
Refined male portrait of Nordic taste, depicting a gentleman aged thirty-nine, as indicated by the contemporary inscription. The subject is captured in half figure against a neutral background, dressed in an elegant black suit with wide white sleeves and a sumptuous lace ruff finely detailed.
The light, calibrated and direct, precisely shapes the face and the hand resting on the hip, elements that confer psychological solidity and sober elegance to the overall composition.
The palette reduced to shades of black, gray, and white, with pink touches for the flesh tone, is typical of bourgeois portraiture in the German and Flemish area of the early seventeenth century.
The work, monogrammed “LS” and dated 1624, can be confidently attributed to Lorenz Strauch, a painter active in Nuremberg, trained within the German Mannerist tradition and known for a sober and realistic style influenced by the Flemish portraiture of Frans Pourbus the Younger and Cornelis de Vos.
Numerous stylistic comparisons are found with the late portraits of Strauch, characterized by the same compositional layout, similar inscriptions ('ÆTATIS SUÆ … Aº …'), and comparable finesse in the rendering of the gorgiere.
A work of great charm and rare pictorial quality, a significant example of bourgeois portraiture from the German-Flemish area in the first quarter of the 17th century, fully attributable to the hand or direct circle of Lorenz Strauch.
In fairly good general condition considering the age of the painting, which appears to have a patina. Some small scattered restoration points are noticeable, along with light glazes and fine surface cracks in the pictorial surface, overall of limited extent and not at all compromising the readability of the depiction. The craquelure is uniform and attributable to the period, with no signs of active detachment. No conservation issues are evident. The canvas has been relined recently. The wooden frame appears to have been replaced at the time of relining and is in good structural condition.
The painting is presented in an elegant lacquered frame from a later period. Small defects and restorations of the same are noted. The frame is included as a courtesy and does not form an integral part of the artwork; any damages to it will not be grounds for complaint or order cancellation.
Dimensions of the painting: 81.5 x 71.5 cm - Dimensions of the frame: 97 x 86 cm
Opera accompanied by a certificate of authenticity with photographic evidence, in accordance with current legal regulations.
