Description from the seller

MATHURIN MOREAU (Dijon, 1822 – Paris, 1912).
Ami
Calamine on a wooden stand.
Signed at the base.
Measurements: 47 cm (height); 4 cm (base).
Allegorical sculpture, work by Mathurin Moreau.
Son of painter Jean-Baptiste Moreau and brother of the also sculptors Auguste and Hippolyte, Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) mainly worked in small-format bronze sculpture, although he also created works in ceramics. His preferred themes were always inspired by romanticism: allegories, literary and mythological figures, nymphs, young and beautiful girls, 'putti' playing, etc. His style was academic and realistic, characterized by the quality of his finishes, his realism, and above all, the grace, charm, and elegance of his models. He exhibited his works at the Paris Salon from 1848, finally earning a medal of honor in the 1897 edition. He balanced his artistic career with politics, becoming the mayor of the 19th District of Paris and having a street named after him in 1912. He is currently represented in the Luxembourg Museum, the Orsay Museum, and the Museum of Arts and Metals in Paris, among others, and has public monuments in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in the French capital.
