This antique bread slicer by Phoenix Werk dates from 1880–1920 and is made of cast iron and mahogany wood, measuring 38 cm in length, 26 cm in height and 38 cm in depth, weighing about 4 kg, and showing a genuine patina from use in an industrial design style.
Description from the seller
This antique bread slicer was made by the well-known German company Phoenixwerk. In 1852, Phoenixwerk was the most modern steel factory in the Ruhr area. The company had blast furnaces for steel and also produced items like this bread slicer. This device probably dates from the late 19th century or the early 20th century.
This bread slicer is in nearly original condition. It could be that the wooden panels (which seem to be mahogany) have been replaced at some point, but this is not certain. The most striking feature is the patina on the metal from extensive use; an honest patina. Especially note the handle; how many hands have held this? The mahogany bread boards are very beautiful. It is a very attractive decorative industrial device but still functional. Although the blade is somewhat tarnished, it remains sharp and usable not only for slicing bread (see photos), but also for cheese and even soap!
The bread slicer is made of solid cast iron and weighs approximately 4kg. The length is 38cm, the height (with the blade down) is 26cm, and the depth (including the lifting arm) is 38cm.
This bread slicer is well packaged and shipped insured.
