Luxury edition in 2 volumes, numbered 557, on Arches vellum, illustrated by Gaston Bussière (1862-1928), a French painter and illustrator emblematic of the Art Deco movement, renowned for his illustrations of literary works such as Flaubert's Salammbô and Oscar Wilde's Salomé.
Bussière focused here on female figures using iconography rich in symbols, with drapery, theatrical poses, and a dreamlike atmosphere, making it one of the most famous interpretations of Flaubert's work.
This historical novel is set in Carthage after the First Punic War and is famous for its exotic and erudite descriptions.
