German illustrated edition of Pompeji in seinen Gebäuden, Alterthümern und Kunstwerken by J. Overbeck, published in 1884 by Verlag von Wilhelm Engelmann, 676 pages, leather binding not original, binding damaged, 27 x 19 cm, in reasonably good condition with 30 large plates and 320 in-text illustrations, the folding map of Pompeii is missing.
Description from the seller
Pompeii depicted in its buildings, antiquities, and artworks by Johannes Overbeeck. Fourth edition, revised and expanded by August Mau, with additional work. Featuring 30 mostly colored views and 320 woodcuts in the text, as well as a large map - Leipzig, Verlag von Wilhelm Engelmann, 1884 - volume - (XVI) 676 pages - non-original green leather binding.
Reasonable. Not the original band, but apparently from another work: title and author’s name glued on the spine, the book block is clearly a bit too small for the cover. The book block is almost loose, the back cover is detached and taped to the inner hinge, tape on the inner hinge at the front. The last endpaper is coming loose. The interior pages are discolored, with some spots/foxing here and there — mainly on the verso of the plates. The edges of pages 199/200 are slightly ragged.
Contains 30 full-page plates (including 4 double-page, 1 fold-out, and 3 colored), all illustrated, and 320 illustrations in the text.
The fire map of Pompeii is missing.
