Mémoires philosophiques du Baron De***, illustrated edition by SN, originally in French, published in 1779 as Tome I by Berton, in leather binding, 310 pages with 4 plates, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Rare illustrated edition of this work, which is part of the tradition of clandestine and critical philosophical texts from the late 18th century, where memoiristic fiction serves as a framework for free reflection on society, religion, and politics.
The first volume, published in 1779 by Breton publisher, presents a series of meditations and narratives with a philosophical tone, where the author, under the guise of an aristocratic character, develops a skeptical and sometimes subversive thought, in implicit dialogue with the Enlightenment.
The form of 'memoirs' allows for a combination of personal narration and intellectual speculation, giving the text a hybrid appearance, between fictional autobiography and moral treatise.
The collection constitutes a revealing bibliographic milestone of the circulation of philosophical ideas on the eve of the Revolution, where anonymity and literary masks protect the author while enabling critique of institutions and dogmas.
