Description from the seller
Oil painting on canvas (Madonna)
Madonna in a half-length portrait with her head covered by a veil.
Technique: Oil on canvas
Estimated period: 17th–18th century (hypothetical)
Virgin Mary in a contemplative pose, half figure, tilted face, calm and meditative gaze, classic drapery with a red tunic and a blue-green cloak.
Abrasion of the painted film, superficial wear, and small areas with loss of color | Rapid creasing of the support due to old tensioning interventions.
The painting depicts a Madonna in the absence of other sacred figures, portrayed from the waist up with a slight tilt of the head and a gentle gaze directed towards the viewer. The rendering of the face, soft and smooth, with subtle gradations of light and shadow and delicate blending in the complexion, recalls the aesthetics of Italian devotional painting of Renaissance and Baroque tradition.
The palette, dominated by deep tones of blue-green and the red of the cloak, follows traditional Marian iconography, in which blue symbolizes purity and red represents charity and divine passion.
Certainly inspired by the works of?
Giovanni Battista Salvi “Sassoferrato” (1609–1685), renowned for his long series of contemplative Madonnas with serene faces and simple yet elegant iconography, deeply rooted in the tradition of Raphael.
