A novel written in 1908 marks the entry of Roger Martin du Gard into literature. Writing already appears to him as the only means of expressing his refusals: he does not erase his heritage, but gradually, all the values—psychological, ideological, literary, aesthetic—of his environment (an affluent milieu of legal professionals and financiers) and his era are scrutinized by his reason and sensitivity. In his published works, 'Devenir' is considered an ironic assessment of his youth.
