Deluxe illustrated edition of Venise la Rouge by Alfred de Musset, with original drawing and a signature by Yves Brayer and Philippe Gonin, limited to 200 copies on handmade vélin, 32 pages, soft cover, published in 1939, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Luxury edition created by Philippe Gonin, limited to only 200 numbered copies on handmade vellum.
Edition No. 20, signed by the artist—in red pencil on the justification.
The poem 'Venice the Red' by Alfred de Musset is here depicted by the painter, engraver, and lithographer YVES BRAYER.
Important illustration comprising 45 original lithographs and engravings in color, including 30 (15+15) diptychs on 15 bifolios measuring approximately 45 x 30 cm; and 15 original two-tone lithographs.
A special edition enriched with a large and magnificent original drawing signed in pencil by the artist, accompanied by a note 'to Professor Leuboullet, with all my sympathy...'. The drawing, created in pencil and ink on two panels (a diptych), depicts Venetian gondolas.
We also enclose the subscription prospectus and an illustrated postcard by the artist.
Although Musset and George Sand experienced passion in 1834 at the Hotel Danieli in Venice, this poem of 17 quatrains (the 12th and 16th are not included in our edition, so the 15 bifolios each contain one stanza on the first page) was written earlier, in 1828.
