Saint Joseph with Child – biscuit – probably France/Germany – circa late 19th / early 20th century
Professionally shipped – more than 850 five-star reviews worldwide.
Bisque porcelain depiction of Saint Joseph lovingly carrying Jesus in his arms, a calm and intimate portrayal of the bond between father and child. The royal apple forms a powerful religious reference to Christ’s dominion over creation and his role as King of Kings. Joseph holds a bundle of lilies in his other hand, the traditional symbol of purity and his protective role within the Holy Holy Family. The cloak is finished with soft floral motifs and gilded accents, typical of late 19th-century devotional items from French-German workshops. The figurine shows slight signs of aging and small retouches made over time to preserve its decorative character.
Height approximately 34 cm, in good condition with normal signs of age and use. Note that the cross on the royal apple is missing.
Marked with the (difficult-to-read) impressed factory stamp from Gräfenthal, used between 1879 and 1886.
