Les Enfants du Capitaine Grant, illustrated edition in French by Jules Verne and Riou, with a red hardback binding, published by Hetzel & Cie, 624 pages, earliest 1897, in reasonable condition.
Description from the seller
Beautiful edition belonging to the Hetzel Collection in a decorative binding 'Dos à l'Ancre' or 'A la mappemonde' and fully illustrated by Riou.
The plot opens with the discovery of a message in a bottle, found inside a shark's belly, which signals the distress of the stranded Captain Grant.
Lord Glenarvan, his wife, and the captain's two children, Mary and Robert, undertake an expedition to find him, guided by fragmentary clues indicating a latitude but not a longitude.
The story unfolds in three major geographical stages: South America, Australia, and New Zealand, each offering varied landscapes, local adventures, and encounters marked by the political and social realities of the 19th century.
Verne blends scientific, ethnographic, and geographic descriptions with an exciting storytelling, where characters face shipwrecks, revolts, and natural dangers, while embodying values of courage, solidarity, and faith in progress.
Riou's illustrations enhance the visual and educational dimension, bringing to life the action scenes and exotic landscapes.

Good condition of the binding, the work in its original full red cardboard binding, slight signs of use, a few small stains on the back cover, gilded edges, smoothly decorated spine, gilded titling and author's name, superb color illustrations on the front cover.
Interior condition is good, with spots; the binding is attached, but the front page is damaged yet well secured. The first front page is detached, and two notebooks are detached on pages 155/157. The notebooks are slightly misaligned. The work is enriched with 172 illustrations by Riou.
