Mathias Sandorf, an illustrated edition by Jules Verne with Léon Benett, published by Hetzel in 1885, in French, 558 pages, with a rigid red binding in good condition.
Description from the seller
Fascinating illustrated edition in a decorative binding 'Dos à l'Ancre' or 'A la mappemonde,' entirely illustrated by Benett for this adventure novel that transposes the spirit of the Count of Monte Cristo into the universe of the Extraordinary Voyages.
The plot opens with a patriotic conspiracy led by Sandorf, a noble Hungarian, against Austrian domination, betrayed by spies, which leads to his arrest and a death sentence.
Saved at the last moment, Sandorf escapes and disappears, only to reappear years later under the identity of Dr. Antékirtt, a wealthy and mysterious man determined to avenge his companions and punish the traitors.
The story unfolds through a series of adventures across the Mediterranean — Malta, Sicily, North Africa — blending plots, pursuits, shipwrecks, and scientific inventions, while highlighting the landscapes and local cultures.
Verne explores themes of justice, revenge, and redemption, placing Sandorf among the ranks of romantic heroes, but giving him a scientific and humanist dimension unique to his work.
Léon Benett's illustrations highlight the visual richness of the novel, depicting Mediterranean settings, action scenes, and dramatic figures.

[6] 552 pages -
Good condition of the binding, the work in its full red cardboard binding at La Mappemonde, signs of wear from use, some visible stains on the back cover, slightly rubbed headbands and corners, gilded edges, smooth spine beautifully decorated, with gilded titling and author's name.
Interior condition is fair to average, with signs of old damp stains throughout the work, especially along the margins. However, these often affect the text itself. Although the damp stains are old and less visible, they cause the paper to be slightly warped. There are some foxing spots. The work is enriched with 111 drawings by Benett and includes a map.
