Very beautiful album dedicated to the work of William Hogarth, consisting of an engraved portrait of the artist as frontispiece and 44 full-page engravings by Davenport, J. Mollison, W. Radclyffe, G. Presbury, T. Phillibrown, etc.

Bound in half-chocolate leather with a spine featuring raised bands highlighted by cold-stamped lines, with the title in gilt letters. Overall in good condition. The leather is slightly rubbed at the edges, with a fragment of the headband missing. Some scattered foxing. Magnificent printing of the engravings, with beautiful contrasts.

William Hogarth, born on November 10, 1697, in London, and died on October 26, 1764, in Chiswick, was an English engraver, painter, and philanthropist.

Child of the Glorious Revolution, recognized early by critics and identified in France as a brilliant mind by Denis Diderot in 1753, Hogarth is a complete artist who embraced multiple modes of expression, and whose influence continues into the early 21st century. As the first free and unique artist of the English school of painting, and founder of the St Martin's Lane Academy, he did not hesitate to use the press and his network of friends to defend his ideas, while expressing, through both pen and chisel and brush, the wanderings, pleasures, and moral contradictions of his time.
