Description from the seller
Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli
(Sankt Goar, 1657 – Rome, 1706)
Landscape with goats
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 71 x 96 cm (canvas) / 90 x 107 cm (with frame)
Period: Late 17th century
Description of the work
The Landscape with goats fully embodies the mature production of Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli, one of the leading interpreters of animal painting in late Seicento Rome. The goats, arranged in the foreground along a steep slope, are treated with extraordinary naturalistic sensitivity: their varied postures, the rendering of their coats, and the volumetric construction of their bodies reveal the artist's deep anatomical knowledge and his capacity for direct observation of nature. The landscape does not serve merely as a background but harmoniously interacts with the animal figures, opening up in the distance into a luminous view animated by rural architectures and vegetation moved by a fluid pictorial rhythm. The composition, built on a balanced diagonal flow, and the warm palette, played with browns, greens, and blues, reflect Rosa da Tivoli’s typical synthesis of northern naturalism and Italian luministic sensitivity, giving the scene a character that is both realistic and poetic.
Biographical notes
Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli, was born in Germany into a family of artists and moved to Italy at a young age, eventually settling permanently in Rome, where he remained active until his death. Integrated into the community of Northern painters working in the capital, he developed an independent style that made him one of the most appreciated specialists in depicting animals within landscapes. His works, highly sought after by collectors of the time, combine the descriptive rigor of the Flemish tradition with the monumentality and brightness of Italian landscapes, anticipating significant developments in 18th-century pastoral painting.
