Antique Baroque iron chest lock from circa 1650–1700, made of forged iron, with a complex multi‑stage mechanism, dimensions 35 cm wide by 17.5 cm high by 6 cm deep, originating from Germany, in good used condition with authentic patina and without a key.
Description from the seller
A piece of history.
Baroque art castle with a complex mechanism (17th century)
Rare baroque chest lock (17th century, probably Southern German). Elaborate labyrinth lock mechanism with two guiding plates – the original key is missing.
The castle dates from the early modern period and impressively displays the blacksmithing art of that era.
Mechanics function description
It is a multi-stage art lock, not a simple padlock mechanism.
The key beard is not a simple, straight pin: it must be guided through three consecutive guiding patterns (labyrinths). These labyrinths serve as spatial 'paths' that can only be passed by an exactly shaped beard.
After performing the beard, two so-called alignment discs (disc bolts / rotation bolts) are positioned correctly — only then can the internal bolts (pins) be retracted, and the lock open.
In brief: unlocking requires the correct operation of the lock's beard through multiple obstacles and the simultaneous alignment of two discs — a complex mechanism that was very secure for its time and typical of highly secured treasure and chest locks from the Baroque period.
Such mechanisms were mostly custom-made; keys and locks are generally designed as a pair.
The surface shows an authentic, even patina, with no restoration or repainting – a genuine collector's piece with character.
