- Byam Shaw (1872–1919) was a British painter, illustrator, and teacher associated with the late Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic movements. Educated at the St John's Wood Art School and the Royal Academy Schools in London, Shaw was known for his highly detailed and symbolically rich compositions. He drew inspiration from medieval themes, classical literature, and religious iconography, and often worked in a meticulous illustrative style that combined narrative intensity with decorative elegance.

Though contemporary with artists like John William Waterhouse and Edward Burne-Jones, Shaw carved a distinct niche with his theatrical compositions and delicate use of color. He also became a respected art instructor, co-founding the Byam Shaw School of Art in London in 1910.

Adam and Eve with the Snake reflects Shaw's fascination with biblical allegory and moral symbolism. In the image, Adam and Eve are portrayed in a stylized, Edenic setting, with the serpent coiled between them—offering the fruit of knowledge. The composition's theatrical posture, lush surroundings, and idealized human forms reflect Shaw's Pre-Raphaelite leanings.

The painting blends narrative clarity with romantic beauty, emphasizing temptation, innocence, and the fall from grace—recurring themes in Shaw’s spiritual and moral works.

Shaw’s artistic legacy remains strong within British art history, especially for those interested in the transition between the Pre-Raphaelite and Edwardian periods.
