Description from the seller
Two women of the people – signed N. Gysis (Nikolaos Gysis, 1842–1901)
Style
Academic Realism of the 19th Century / Munich School
This style is characterized by a faithful depiction of everyday life, attention to human expressions and clothing details, as well as a solid treatment of light and shadows. The work is fully within the European realist tradition of the second half of the 19th century, typical of the German academic training where Gysis studied.
Artistic, technical, and historical description.
This oil painting on canvas, mounted on a cardboard panel, depicts two women from the people in a simple and profoundly human scene. One is seated, her body slightly hunched, hands resting on a large basket; the other stands beside her, in a reserved yet dignified attitude. The artist sensitively captures expressions of fatigue, resignation, and everyday life, demonstrating great psychological mastery.
The earthy tones, browns, and beiges dominate the composition, reinforcing the scene's sobriety. The rendering of fabrics, headdresses, and the basket is precise, reflecting careful observation of reality. The modeling and chiaroscuro recall European academic painting from the late 19th century.
The work is signed in red 'N. Gysis' at the bottom left for Nikolaos Gysis (1842–1901), a major figure of the Munich School. Gysis was renowned for his genre scenes, portraits of women, and depictions of popular life, in a realistic style mixed with a narrative and social dimension. This painting, through its theme and treatment, fits within this tradition.
From a technical standpoint, the work shows cracks, surface wear, and areas requiring restoration. A professional intervention would help restore the richness of the colors and the depth of the composition.
Through its subject, signature, and invoice, this painting serves as an interesting example of 19th-century realistic painting and holds real potential for collectors or enthusiasts of antique genre scenes.
Provenance: private collection.
