The globe is a tribute to cartographer Abraham Ortelius, recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas and of great influence on mapmakers of the 17th century.

The object consists of a wooden frame and a paper-mâché globe. The frame is supported by three legs. On the ring of the frame are the twelve signs of the zodiac.
