Description:
This is a distinctive chawan titled “Kongōshin” (金剛心), produced by the Hanakōzan Kiln (花光山窯), accompanied by its original signed wooden box (tomobako). The bowl features an evocative combination of landscape painting in soft blue tones and dynamic brushed calligraphy, creating a powerful balance of serenity and expressive energy.
Estimated production period: late Shōwa to early Heisei era (circa 1970–1990).
The clay body shows a natural warm hue, while the hand-painted mountain forms and flowing inscriptions bring a poetic presence to the vessel. The title “Kongōshin”—literally Diamond Mind or Indestructible Heart—evokes Zen philosophy, inner clarity, and spiritual resilience, making this an especially meaningful piece for tea practice.
Both the bowl and the tomobako bear the same inscription and signature, strongly reinforcing its authenticity and studio origin.
About Hanakōzan Kiln (花光山窯):
Hanakōzan Kiln is known for:
Traditional Japanese tea-ceremony vessels
Earthy clay bodies with natural texture
Hand-painted landscapes reflecting classical aesthetics
Calligraphic decoration inspired by poetry and Zen themes
The kiln has long been respected among regional potteries for producing heartfelt, artisan-made tea utensils rooted in Japanese cultural tradition.
About the Title “Kongōshin” (金剛心):
“Kongōshin” is a Buddhist concept meaning:
Unshakable spirit
Diamond-like clarity and strength
Inner purity and steadfastness
In tea culture, naming a chawan with such a title enhances its philosophical significance, aligning the vessel with meditative practice and the quiet state of mind cultivated in chanoyu.
Expert’s Insight:
This chawan is a compelling example of regional Japanese studio pottery with a strong artistic identity. The interplay of landscape imagery and expressive calligraphy gives the bowl a vivid sense of depth and movement.
