This two-panel hand-painted folding screen, titled “Manyo Hyakka Hyakusō (One Hundred Flowers and Grasses),” is a 1991 reproduction based on the original work by the renowned Japanese painter Kinoshita Akira (1927–1994). It was produced in traditional nihonga style with gilt embellishment, reflecting the refined sensibility and delicate colour harmony characteristic of modern Japanese painting.
The composition presents a serene garden scene brimming with seasonal flora, including plum blossoms, camellias, pampas grass, bellflowers, lilies, azaleas, wisteria, enkianthus, kerria, peach blossoms, pinks, clematis, and thoroughwort. These plants are gracefully arranged against a soft gold background, symbolising the abundance and renewal of nature throughout the year.
A printed label on the reverse reads: “Manyo Hyakka Hyakusō – Gilt Folding Screen – Original Painting by Kinoshita Akira – I.E.I Art Gallery 1991.”
Kinoshita Akira was born in Hita, Oita Prefecture, in 1927. After graduating from Kyoto City University of Arts, he became active in the Shinseisaku Association and Sōgakai, exhibiting in numerous national exhibitions. He later served as professor at Kyoto City University of Arts and was awarded the Kyoto City Art Merit Award in 1989. His major works include temple murals and sliding-door paintings, and his style is celebrated for its luminous colour and graceful depiction of natural motifs.
The screen shows wear consistent with age, including minor scratches, discolouration, stains, corner chips on the wooden frame, deformation and tarnish on the metal fittings, areas of paper loss, and noticeable stains and marks on the reverse. Fair to good used condition. Please refer to the photos for further details of the condition.
