This Showa period ohitsu is a traditional Japanese wooden vessel used for storing and keeping freshly cooked rice or porridge warm. Typically crafted in a circular or oval shape, ohitsu containers are designed to preserve the texture and flavour of rice after cooking.
This particular piece is finished with a rich vermilion lacquer, combining the natural heat-retaining properties of wood with the moisture-preserving qualities of lacquer. This helps prevent the rice from drying out, allowing it to maintain its soft and fluffy texture for longer periods.
