Description from the seller
Beautiful, very large work by JAN ADAM KRUSEMAN: 1804 - 1862: 'noble lady with book'
Jan Adam Kruseman (Haarlem, February 12, 1804 – there, March 17, 1862) was a Dutch painter. During his time, he was a well-known portrait painter. The prophet Elisha and the Shunammite woman, Resting girl, Rodolphe le Chevalier (1777-1865).
Work is from his period of 1830/1835.
The work is in very good condition, with some successful restorations, and is housed in a beautiful contemporary frame.
The cloth is signed, fully on the edge, with elegant letters: AK... The cloth needs to be taken out of the frame to make the signature clearly visible (see attached photos).
My parents have had the painting repaired several times by professional restorers since they first bought it. They have had the painting for 30 years, and there are hardly any repairs visible on the front.

He also created several portraits of the royal family. His contact with the royal house was established in 1833 when he was commissioned by Adriaan van der Hoop (1778-1854) to paint a (posthumous) portrait of Tsar Alexander I of Russia, who had died in 1825. The painting was intended for Anna Paulowna, wife of the then Crown Prince Willem II and sister of Alexander I. This led to Kruseman being able to paint both King Willem I and his son in 1837. When Willem II became king in 1840, following his father’s abdication, Kruseman was immediately commissioned to paint a state portrait. At least six more portraits were to follow...
