Artist biography
Manuel Urgellès i Trias (Barcelona, 1866 – 1939) was a Catalan painter, draftsman, and engraver. Son of a weaver, he studied at the Llotja School in Barcelona. Although the early years of his life are little known, by 1904 he was studying and working on copies at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Between 1905 and 1907, he had a workshop in the Ribera neighborhood of Barcelona, where some students attended. He was a member of the Cercle Artístic de Barcelona and a teacher of painting, drawing, and especially engraving — in particular, etching — at the Institut de les Arts del Llibre.
Very interested in artistic teaching, he founded a brief Societat Pestalozziana in 1910. That same year, he was awarded the gold medal at the National Exhibition of the Argentine Centennial in Buenos Aires, and he successfully exhibited some of his paintings and drawings in London. His work, dedicated to landscape painting always from nature and to the figure, as well as to symbolist and allegorical themes, stands out for his profound mastery of drawing, color, and expression, with a predominance of grisaille and a marked impressionist sense. His art shows influences from Modest Urgell and Arnold Böcklin, although he always maintained a strong personal style.
