Pia Desideria : Lib. III. Ad Ferdinandu[m] IV. Hung: Ac Boemiae Regem. - Hermano Hugone [Herman Hugo] (1588-1629)
Græcii [Graz]: Apud Franciscum Widmanstadium, 1651. [14], 436, [4] pages. 15.8cm x 9.5cm. Hardcover with stone-coloured boards and spine, hand lettered spine, and grey edges. Later edition of this significant work of Baroque literature and emblematics, consisting of emblematic pictures, elegiac verses, and quotes from the Church Fathers to illustrate "pious desires" or spiritual wishes. It was originally published in 1624. This edition, specifically addressed to Ferdinand IV, focusses on the third book of the original work. Comes with an engraved title page, an engraved frontispiece, 45 engraved emblems, and engraved tailpieces throughout.
Rubbing, bumping, and wear, and some damage to the boards and spine. The top spine is fraying a bit at the back hinge. Library sticker on the top of the spine, and remnants of a sticker on the bottom of the spine. Pen markings and Ad Bibliothecam sticker in the front pastedown endpaper. Pen and pencil markings on the front free endpaper, and pen markings on its verso. Scattered pen markings (mostly underlining, some comments in the margins) throughout. Page 39/40 has a large tear within the page, not affecting the content (see photos). Some mended tears throughout, such as on pages 87, 133, and 327 Pages 160, 327 and 346 have a small tear at the bottom, not affecting the text (see photos for damages). Browning, spotting, and water staining throughout. The text and illustrations are clear, and the binding is solid. Overall, and considering its age, a copy in good condition.
