Description from the seller
Rare monograph on Jeanne the Popeess (a 9th-century figure who allegedly became pope by disguising herself as a man), in which the author states that it is a legend.
This historical study was condemned to destruction, according to Gay, by judgment of the Tribunal of the Seine on May 22, 1863, certainly due to a misunderstanding, because 'the author, a learned scholar but religious, presents documents related to Pope Joan, and he expresses the opinion that her story is a popular error and that a woman has never sat on the papal throne' (Gay Lemonnyer, II, 618).
Enlarged and illustrated edition with an engraved woodcut on the frontispiece and a fold-out plate on Chinese paper, engraved on steel.
Limited edition of 500 numbered copies (No. 101).
Half-leather lemon binding with corners, smooth back decorated with a title piece and gold logue composition. Gilded head. Cover preserved (without spine).
Condition: rare scuffs on the headcap and corners. Interior clean and fresh. Very good example, untrimmed.
About the author:
Philomneste junior is the pseudonym of Pierre-Gustave Brunet, born and died in Bordeaux (1805-1896). This bibliographer linguist was also known for his studies of regional history. He should not be confused with the bibliophile and scholar Jacques Charles Brunet (1805-1867).
