Very beautiful edition of this evocation of Morocco by the Tharaud brothers, adorned with 30 compositions by the painter Joseph-Félix Bouchor (1853-1937), paintings reproduced on attached vignettes. Decorations by David Burnand.
Limited to 220 copies, of which 200 are in Hollande, and 20 are unnumbered, with this one on unnumbered vellum.
Rebound in luxurious full morocco in garnet red, with a rounded spine decorated with a beautiful pattern of fillets and gold tooling, geometric shapes, and broad cold-stamped borders, with a gilded head. Cold-stamped and gold-ruled borders framing the pastedowns. Comes with a matching slipcase.
Covers and spine preserved.
In excellent condition despite the scuffs on the case. Clean and sturdy binding, impeccable interior, a beautiful, uncut copy.
Joseph-Félix Bouchor (1853-1937), a student of Benjamin Constant and Jules Lefebvre at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, exhibited at the Salon of the French Artists in 1878. He was awarded medals at the Universal Expositions of 1889 and 1900. He was named a knight of the Legion of Honour in 1910, and later an officer in 1921. During the First World War, he was in a way the official painter of the General Staffs. He undertook a long journey to Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco, and became associated with Orientalist painters. He illustrated several books, including Le Maroc by the Tharaud brothers and Marrakech in the Palms by André Chevrillon.
