Description from the seller
The nature of the magazine: Le Rire was a French weekly illustrated humor and satirical magazine, published every Saturday and directed by Félix Juven at that time. Publication period: In 1901, the journal was in its seventh or eighth year of publication (it started in October 1894).
Format and content: It was generally published in in-4 format (approximately 24 by 31 cm) and contained between 12 and 16 pages per issue. Its content was extremely rich in illustrations, drawings, and caricatures in black and color. Themes: The newspaper was dedicated to humor, political and social satire, and reflected Parisian social and artistic life of the time. It often dealt with themes related to the entertainment world (theatre, cabarets, stars like Yvette Guilbert), literature, and current events. Artistic collaborators: Le Rire was famous for the quality of its illustrators, gathering the leading caricature artists of the early 20th century. In 1901, it featured renowned artists such as Charles Léandre, Caran d'Ache, Willette, Capiello, Métivet, Forain, Steinlen, Rabier, Wilette, Lautrec, Sem, among others. Significance: It was one of the most popular and successful French humor magazines before World War I, marking a period of great press freedom following the 1881 law.
The tone: The journal approached social issues, politics, customs, and the world of entertainment with lightness, but sometimes with an acerbic critique.
Famous illustrators: 'Le Rire' served as a showcase for some of the greatest artists of the time. It featured works by major artists such as:
Albert Guillaume, Rabier
Théophile Alexandre Steinlen
Louis Abel-Truchet
Caran d'Ache (as seen in a 1901 drawing of explorers)
Jean-Louis Forain
Charles Léandre
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (although his most famous contributions are slightly earlier).
And many others like Gus Bofa, Louis Morin, Roubille, Willette, etc.
A fragile sheet, see photos, normal wear and tear.
from July 1901 to July 1902
