Almir Da Silva Mavignier (May 1, 1925, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – September 3, 2018, Hamburg, Germany) was a visual artist, graphic designer, and educator. Before emigrating to Europe from his native Brazil, he and Abraham Palatnik founded a studio that taught painting classes to patients in psychiatric hospitals. At that time, he was interested in Gestalt theory and began making connections between science and art. After completing his studies at the Ulm School of Design with Max Bill, he established his own graphic design studio and also joined the Zero group, an experimental collective from Düsseldorf that published a magazine of the same name. The group was committed to the idea that art should no longer serve as the domain of emotions and subjective expression. Mavignier believed that art and design are related, distinguished only by their purpose, which led to his parallel careers as a designer and artist. Mavignier developed an original poster art technique based on the repetition of a single graphic and geometric element. The resulting pattern, and the product it aims to promote, are easily memorable. In the early 1960s, he began collaborating with the Yugoslav community of artists active in concrete art and optical art. He contributed to organizing the first international exhibition 'New Tendencies' in Zagreb in 1961.
