Intaglio in carnelian, a replica of an Ancient Greek piece, measuring 18 × 8 × 3 mm, in good condition with age-related wear, acquired in 1990 from a private collection in the United Kingdom, previously owned since 1975 from an antique market.
Description from the seller
Replica of Ancient Carnelian Gem with Greek Inscription
Dimensions: 18 × 8 × 3 mm
Material: Carnelian
Condition: Good, with age-related wear
Origin: Copy of Eastern Mediterranean / Greek-Roman world
Period: XX century
This small yet powerful carnelian gem is engraved with a multi-line inscription in Greek characters, composed of voces magicae—the mystical syllables commonly used in protective amulets during the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods. Such gems were carried as personal talismans intended to guard the wearer against illness, envy, misfortune, and malevolent forces.
The smooth surface and deep reddish tone of the stone reflect the qualities prized in antiquity: vitality, protection, and spiritual resilience. Its size suggests it was once mounted in a ring or worn as a pendant, serving as a private and constant source of protection.
A fine example of ancient magical practice and personal devotion, typical of the Eastern Mediterranean tradition.
From a private European collection, acquired before 1990.
Previously part of an old collection formed in the 70s.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with tracking number and insurance.
International shipping available.
