Description:
This is a highly distinctive Japanese tea bowl (chawan) created by Shōshō (昌尚), finished in the rare and visually striking Taiha Saiyū (玳玻彩釉) glaze.
The piece is accompanied by its original signed wooden box (tomobako), confirming authenticity and elevating its collectability.
Estimated production period:
Late 20th century (circa 1970s–1990s)
The bowl features a softly rounded form with a stable foot, ideal for both formal tea practice and display. The surface is dominated by flowing, organic glaze patterns resembling tortoiseshell or mineral veining, creating depth, movement, and an unmistakable presence. Each angle reveals subtle variations, making this chawan truly one of a kind.
Who is Shōshō (昌尚)?
Shōshō is a ceramic artist known for experimental and decorative glaze work, particularly pieces that emphasize surface expression and kiln effects rather than strict classical restraint.
Characteristics associated with Shōshō’s works include:
emphasis on rare and technically demanding glazes
organic, naturally formed surface patterns
balance between functional tea ware and sculptural presence
works often produced in limited quantities
The presence of a signed tomobako significantly reinforces the authenticity of this piece and confirms it as a genuine work by the artist.
What is Taiha Saiyū (玳玻彩釉)?
Taiha Saiyū is an extremely uncommon decorative glaze name.
“Taiha” (玳玻) refers to the appearance of tortoiseshell (bekkō), prized for its mottled depth and organic beauty
“Saiyū” (彩釉) means polychromatic or decorative glaze
Unlike copper-based glazes, Taiha Saiyū relies on complex mineral reactions and controlled kiln atmospheres to produce layered, vein-like patterns and subtle metallic undertones.
Key features include:
tortoiseshell-like marbling and flowing lines
depth created by overlapping glaze layers
highly unpredictable results, making repetition nearly impossible
rarity even among contemporary Japanese ceramic works
Because of its technical difficulty and low yield, Taiha Saiyū pieces are seldom encountered, especially in chawan form with original box.
About the Tomobako (Original Wooden Box)
This tea bowl comes with its original signed tomobako, bearing the glaze name and the artist’s seal.
For collectors—particularly in Europe—this is crucial because it:
guarantees authorship
confirms the original title and glaze designation
significantly enhances long-term value and trust
supports provenance for serious collections
Expert’s Insight:
This chawan stands out as an exceptional example of late 20th-century Japanese glaze experimentation. The Taiha Saiyū surface is both visually powerful and technically refined, offering a depth rarely seen even among contemporary works. Combined with its calm, well-proportioned form, the bowl successfully bridges artistic expression and tea-ceremony functionality. For collectors seeking something genuinely rare rather than merely decorative, this piece offers strong individuality, authenticity, and long-term appeal.
Antique/Vintage Notice:
This is a vintage item. Please note that it may show natural signs of age, such as minor wear, slight discoloration, or subtle imperfections. These characteristics are part of its history and enhance its authenticity.
