First edition published in 1980 by Graphic-sha, Ito Shinsui Sketchbook: Figure Studies is a rare collection of figure drawings by Ito Shinsui. It offers a valuable insight into the foundations of figure depiction by Ito Shinsui (1898–1972), one of the most influential Japanese painters of the Taisho and Showa periods.
This volume focuses on pencil drawings, quick croquis, and selected color studies depicting women in kimono and figures from everyday life. The pages vividly convey Shinsui’s keen observational skills and refined draftsmanship. Essays and commentary by Daiji Hamada and Ito Shisui are included, providing important perspectives on Shinsui’s artistic style, techniques, and approach to figure composition.
