Moissanite, also known chemically as carborundum or silicon carbide, is a rare mineral from the element mineral class. It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system with the chemical composition SiC and forms flat, rounded, hexagonal crystals up to five millimeters in size. The mineral is colorless in pure form but exhibits a wide spectrum of colors—from green (nitrogen) to blue to black (aluminum, boron)—due to traces of other elements such as nitrogen, boron, or aluminum.

Moissanite was first identified in 1904 by Henri Moissan in a mineral sample from the Canyon Diablo meteorite, which was found near the Barringer Crater. Its composition was first examined in 1892 by François Ernest Mallard and in 1893 by Georges Friedel; they recognized that it contained a particularly hard material that was inert against hydrochloric acid, initially believing it to be diamond. In 1904, Moissan was able to analyze a larger quantity of the meteorite and, noticing the characteristic hexagonal crystals, realized that the meteorite contained silicon carbide. The new mineral was named moissanite after its discoverer.
