Gaston Sébire (1920-2001)
Painter born on August 18, 1920, in Saint-Samson, Calvados. Died in 2001.
He was appointed Official Painter of the Navy in 1973.
From 1936 to 1944, after his studies, Gaston Sébire worked at night at the post offices in Rouen in order to devote himself to painting during the day.
After settling in Paris in 1951, while remaining faithful to Normandy, Gaston Sébire created the costumes and sets for 'L’Ange gris' by Cuevas in 1953. From the 1960s onwards, he regularly participated in group exhibitions: the Salon des Indépendants; the Salon d’Automne; the Salon Comparaisons; the Salon des Artistes Français; and the Salon d’Angers.
He also participated in various exhibitions of the École de Paris at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris between 1953 and 1961. In 1957, Gaston Sébire returned to his Normandy, where he settled with his family. From 1965, he exhibited at Wally Findlay Galleries in New York, Paris, and Chicago. Awarded the Critic's Prize in 1953, the Greenshields Prize in 1957, he received the Gold Medal at the Salon of French Artists in 1968.
In 1991, the Musée de la Marine paid tribute to Gaston Sébire throughout the summer.
