Necklace with 51 large Murano Chevron Rosetta beads in six layers, dating 1850–1920, Country of Origin: Murano, Provenance: Ghana.
Description from the seller
General, number of beads, origin
A very interesting necklace with 51 old Chevron / Rosetta beads, made in Murano, dating from between 1850 and 1920.
The connoisseurs among bead collectors will immediately recognize this necklace as a masterpiece.
All beads are of very good quality, beautifully collected and strung in increasing size.
Between the middle and largest bead, there are two similar rows of Rosetta's, ranging from relatively small to relatively large.
Studying the string also shows that these beads were finished manually, resulting in small differences in the finishing.
Why 51 beads?
The number 51 has no special or mystical significance in the regions where these beads are commonly found, such as among the Ashanti in Ghana. The count of 51 seems to have become popular during a time when many necklaces were made and sold with 50 beads, with the 51st bead added in case one of the beads was broken. Perhaps this was common with many other types of beads from Murano, but because these Rosettas all have different sizes, this is not relevant for this necklace.
Quality
The quality of the beads is very good.
We have thoroughly examined the beads. There is no bead that is damaged.
Weight and height
Chain: 970 grams
The smallest Rosetta's – at the beginning and end of the string – measure 18 x 13 mm.
The medium size measures 26* 18 mm.
The three middle beads measure:
36 * 30 mm
50 * 30 mm
41 * 28 mm.
