Ancient Roman solid bronze duck’s head, skilfully crafted with finely rendered and realistic detail to the eyes, beak, and contours of the head. The duck’s head will be supplied with the display stand shown in the photographs (stand not permanently attached).
This bronze duck head was most likely used as the decorative terminal of the handle on a Roman bronze oil lamp. Higher-quality lamps of the 1st–3rd century AD frequently featured zoomorphic finials, with animal heads cast in solid bronze and fitted to the end of a curved handle attached to the lamp body.
Ducks, being a source of food and associated with water-rich environments, symbolized prosperity and fertility in the Ancient Roman world.
