George Lilanga (1934–2005) was a Tanzanian painter and sculptor, internationally known for his dynamic, caricatural style that fused Makonde sculptural traditions with the painting of the Tingatinga school. He moved to Dar es Salaam in 1972, where his style evolved through the Tingatinga school and exposure to other modern artists. Artistic Development In 1973, he joined an art center founded by other artists, which gave him the opportunity to learn new techniques such as engraving and lithography. Around 1980, under the influence of the Tingatinga school, he began producing vibrant animal paintings. He developed a unique style by transforming traditional sculptural forms into two-dimensional works (paintings, engravings, and panels), characterized by brightly colored figures, clear contours, and a dreamlike atmosphere. Themes and Style He is nicknamed "the Picasso of Africa"​​for his ability to innovate artistic traditions in a contemporary context. His works draw on Makonde traditions, particularly the figures of shetani (spirits). His style is characterized by constantly moving figures, bright colors, and a strong sense of social commentary and caricature. Many critics have noted the influence and similarities between his work and the graffiti of Keith Haring. International Recognition Lilanga has become one of the most internationally recognized Tanzanian artists. His works have been exhibited in numerous countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United States. His creations are present in important private and institutional collections and have been shown in prestigious museums such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Guggenheim in Bilbao. The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the capt. Felix Lorenz. In case of sale outside the EU, the art work must be authorized by the Cultural Heritage's Italian Ministry and this procedure will be carried out by me, without any additional cost, will extend few shipping days.
