The Medal "For the Defense of the Caucasus" was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on May 1, 1944, establishing the Medal "For the Defense of the Caucasus." The medal's design was created by artist N. I. Moskalov. The Medal "For the Defense of the Caucasus" was awarded to all participants in the defense of the Caucasus—servicemen of the Red Army, Navy, and NKVD troops, as well as civilians who directly participated in the defense. The Medal "For the Defense of the Caucasus" is worn on the left chest and, if other USSR medals are worn, is placed after the Medal "For the Defense of Kyiv."
