Medieval Bronze Ring with Inscription – AD 1000 to 1400 – 23x18 mm – 6.82 g
This remarkable medieval ring is crafted from bronze and features a thick, oval bezel engraved with a circular inscription surrounding a raised central field. The lettering is executed in a Gothic-style script, typical of the High to Late Middle Ages, forming a complete loop around the bezel. Although some characters have been smoothed by time, the inscription reads approximately “+AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENA”, a devotional formula invoking the Virgin Mary, frequently used on rings of this type.
The inner band has been expertly shaped for comfort and bears consistent patination throughout, indicating extended burial and age. This ring likely served both as a personal devotional object and a protective talisman, worn daily by a Christian believer. Its robust form and clear lettering suggest it belonged to a person of modest means but strong faith.
